While awaiting for my usual bird subjects to arrive....this beauty of
a Western Tanager showed up. Offered me the opportunity for a few shots. He flew off and I've not seen him since.

1/250
f11
ISO 400
canon 7D and a canon 400mm lens plus 1.4x tele
late afternoon light, no flash

photo is untouched...but I do have this same photo "cropped" if anyone is interested in seeing it,let me know and I will post it. Thanks

Hi Glenn,
It's a beautiful bird and your exposure and detail are spot on, along with a great perch. The composition is less than ideal imo as the bird's face is close to the left edge of the frame. You probably didn't have time to rotate the camera to horizontal and give him more room on the left but that would have been ideal here I think. :toast:

Great opportunity, beautiful bird, technicals all look very nice. Agree it would be nice to have more space on the left, probably would have worked better as a horizontal.

What a beautiful bird. I really like how well he is separated from the background. Appears to be quite sharp at this size. Agree about the comp. I would also turn down the yellow channel just a touch and see if I could get back some detail on the neck just above the wing.

Great catch, Glenn. I've only seen a few of these and never had a chance at photographing one of them. They;'re very high on my wish list! If you had time to rotate your camera, I might have gone with the horizontal format. It's awfully crowded in front of the Tanager. I love the bg.

Beautiful bird, pose and feather detail. Exposure is spot on.
I agree with the others with space in front of the bird.

Nice surprise indeed. Nicely captured. Nits already mentioned.
