Irony

Awhile back, I posted an image of a controlled burn by the BLM on the stock driveway near my home. This image was taken from just below the edge of the fire line. Although I am aware that fire can encourage a healthy diversity of plant life, I thought at the time that 'habitat improvement' projects should be aimed at improving habitat for wildlife and that the time and tax dollars were wasted on this project. For the last two years, a constant stream of cattle have grazed off the stockdrive spring and fall. As a result, the more beneficial forbs and grassed haven't had the chance to reproduce and spread and only unpalatable weeds are left to set seed. This month, the old burn is a sea of lupine ; lovely to look at, a heavenly scent on the morning breeze, and deadly to livestock. A beautiful bit of irony (IMO).

Nancy - nice image and very interesting story. I didn't know that lupine were deadly to cattle.
Ironic, for sure!

Astute observations Nancy, and your photo nicely illustrates the irony. In the days of film, answering the question of what fares best on lupine was easy: Ektachrome!

Congrats on the WP, this tells a fascinating story about our attempts to "control" nature.
