Lonely Tree

The photo is taken in the Gran Sasso National Parc in Abruzzo, Italy during a workshop I ran on landscape photography in October 2010 with a group of 8 photographers. It was late in the afternoon with dramatic clouds and sun and therefore for my taste an ideal situation for this kind photography.

It is taken with a Canon 1Ds mkIII and Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS (in fact my most used lens for landscape photography). No filters were used and post processing was done entirely in Adobe Lightroom.

f/8, 1/160s, ISO 200 @200mm.

This is really well done. The lighting is fantastic and the background mountains lend a nice sense of scale to the tree.

Beautiful light, Hans! Love the lone tree. I am undecided about cropping the base of the bg mountain at the left of the frame. While it helps to define the mountain, I think the brightness is a bit distracting. Maybe if it were toned down a bit?

Fantastic moody image! :toast:

Hans, this is a lovely landscape, with all the attendant dramatic features. I am bothered by the dark blue, especially around the cliffs in the URHC. Mostly because of the halo around the darkest cliffs, but also because of its very presence. Can you explain it to me?

Hi Joseph,
Thanks very much for your comments. I don't think I could include the base of the mountain and the mountain in the back is there to bring in layers and depth in the picture. For the brightness works well.

Hi Phil,
Thanks very much for your comments. There is not really a halo in the sense of post processing defects. It is simply the way the light was going through the clouds. Sometimes the light has interesting ways to go.

Very nice light, Hans, an the presentation is good. I like the different planes here and how they layer into the scene.

Real nice, Hans! Well composed and love the warm light against the blue light in the back.

This caught my attention instantly, Hans. I like this very much, for its well organised composition, its mood and its compelling visual interest.

Nice shot, Hans. I like the strong side-lighting and contrast on the fg grass and tree set against the low contrast bg. The blue sky complements the warm sunlight on the grass and tree very well.

The tree looks like a brave fellow there, by himself, confronting the bad weather than I presume it occurs quite often. It's his moment to shine in your image, Hans! Great work!

The lighting and composition are terrific. There's a nice balance between the tree and the distant peak. The dark clouds at the top really help tell the story.
