Sugar Land, TX June25, 2011

D3 ISO 500. 300/2.8 with 2x tc. f5.6 1/200s. -0.7ev. Natural Light. Handheld. Sitting on the ground near a creek. Abut 85% FF. Cropped from the right only for comp.

The back light here was quite a challenge for me. Fortunately this heron was patient as I tried to get it right and let me take quite a few images. The sun was going in and out of the clouds adding to my difficulty. Interestingly, the images at -0.7ev were the best. In part because the upper feathers weren't blown, but also because the colors were richer. I was surprised that the bird wasn't so dark as to be unsalvageable.

Good sharpness, color and detail. I like that the feathers have details in them. Thanks for sharing, nicely done.

Gorgeous, Angela. Sharp as can be, and I like the way you handled the backlight.

Excellent work in exposing this just right Angela. I love the deep, rich colours and splendid detail you've captured in the handsome Heron, the yellow eye and red legs (particularly the right one that's more lit up) contrast very well. Another lovely shot, well done and thanks for sharing :^)

Very cool bird and pose. The larger view show how well you did with not only sharpness, but exposure too. Great colors on this Heron.

Good job in getting some detail out of the shadows, this is a very difficult shot to pull off, way to go.
