Another of the bird I am working on in the farmyard. I wanted to convey more of a habitat feel to the shot by keeping it a bit wide.
I know a lot are not keen on square crops. Have a look at the larger one. Taken about 8 o'clock yeserday evening.
Sigma 100-300mm
D7000
Crop from horizontal
500 ISO
320th @f8
Levels.

John, the large image really shows nice detail on the bird and I love the perch post with its weathered look and great twisted rusty wire. I like the BG with its vege, building, and touch of sky. Lends a great feel for where this bird is hanging out.

Gorgeous, John. You should pay the guy who tied off that cable so artistically.

Thanks ! That was quick ! The post is for sale atthe end of the season. !
The bird just flies around the yard sitting on anything and everything. She sat on the orange hazard light on a tractor last night but kept sliding off !. Didn't look very good anyway.

It looks like you've got some great detail in the owl's feathers. I love the eye contact! The owl stands out really nice against the green background.

Wonderful expression on this little dude. I love the post and wire too, how come stuff ages so nicely across the pond (people too)? High marks all around John. You are posting some wonderful photos.

Lovely shot of this Owl John and the post with the twisted wire adds a degree of extra interest I don't normally appreciate in wildlife pictures, but it certainly works well here :^)

I'm one of those that who rarely feel a square crop works better than a rectangular one (personal taste thing no doubt!), and in this case, if this were mine, I would definitely crop out a good portion of the top part, not only to create a horizontal frame but to effectively remove most of what appears to be some sort of building directly behind the subject, which to me is rather distracting.

Thanks all.
Ashley - I did try a landscape but felt it took a lot of interest out of the shot. Here's one anyway..
Makes it a big crop too. Good thing about the D7000 it can handle it better than my old Nikon.

Way to cool to have a resident owl to photograph. I like the detail, perch and background showing the habitat. I do kind of like the repost a little better but both are fine images, well done.
