In a Fog

Hello all, I had a bit of a layoff due to some unforeseen issues that had to be dealt with but hopefully I'll be back to posting on a regular basis again and as I scan the recent pages there are, as always, some incredible images posted. We had a chance to spend 10 days in March on the Oregon/Northern California coast along the 101 Coastal Highway and as I have heard for years the scenery is outstanding. During the 10 day period we experience about 3 hours one afternoon where there was actually some blue patches of sky present, the rest of the time it was raining or at least overcast. This image was taken on the coast in Southern Oregon as the tide was slowly coming in. What caught my eye was the slight details in the sand surrounding the rock as the tide went back out to sea. The only thing i wish i could change is the f-stop setting. I usually shoot at f-18 or highter but for some reason I must have overlooked that on this occasion.

Thanks for stopping by to take a look.

As always your thoughts and comments are welcome and appreciated.

Nicely composed and the monochrome really shows the textures well. Could maybe do with a bit less sky, but my eyes are really focusing on the rocks, reflection and sand to care too much.

lovely image, I really like the mood coming from this image and the monochrome works very well here. The amount of sky looks just right to me. :wavey:

Mark,

I like the stark, lonely mood I'm getting from this. I guess partly because of the fog and how quiet I know it gets on the coast in these conditions; a bit chilly (almost to the bone at times,) the smell of the salt air and just the sound of the surf.. is enough to find beauty here even though you didn't see the sun much. I think this captures that sense very well.

If it were me, I'd crop a little from the sky to keep the emphasis on the beach, rocks and patterns in the sand that attracted you. My only nit is a wish that there was more room on the right to include the entire pool around the rock. Other than that, I like it.

I love the mood you've captured here! The B&W processing is perfect. I wish there was a bit more room on the right. :toast:

Mark, You really captured a wonderful mood and feel here. I think Lon explained that very nice, and better than I could do. It is here and I do feel it. I do wish for just a bit more room on the right, but still very nice!

There's a very strong visual connection between the foreground rock and the cluster of stacks in the distance that works very well for me. Quite a nice image overall. Like Lon, I'd perhaps favor a small crop off the top and may have preferred this a bit more if you'd taken a step to the right to include the full depression surrounding the foreground rock, but those are minor critiques.

I think this is quite nice Mark, even with the f/3.5. Nicely composed, and well executed. I do wish there was slightly more room on the right, but that's pretty minor with this view, more major when it comes to matting and framing. B&W conversion is excellent.

Thanks all for your input. Not knowing what to expect when I got to the Oregon coast, weather wise and or sea tides etc when I found myself on the beach I was really taken aback at the beauty even surrounded in the fog. The one thing I had to watch and work around was the tides as the sea rolled in and back out again. Also the fact that there was so much potential that I was probably looking towards my next shot even as the current one was taken. It was a good learning experience for me for sure. I will definitely have some hip waders with me next time ;) Maybe this image i'm posting now is a little closer to what I've gladly received in the feedback above. FG rock is a little further away but here it is. Thanks again.

Beautiful work with the fog and wet sand. I love the soft colors and the overall palette you present here. Strong elements through the image give the eye nice points to move between. Well done.
