Shackleford Banks Horses

On the outer banks of North Carolina, there are many wild horses whose history dates back some 200 years. They are managed once per year for health and breeding control, as you can see a brand on the flank of one horse in this image.

I like the strong contrast and saturated colors. It would be nice not to have the tail of the right most horse cut off.

Hi Wick,

The colour and lighting here is very nice, and I like how the horses' attention is focused on something outside the frame (and how it leaves me wondering what it was). I share Mark's feeling that inclusion of the tail on the horse on the right would likely have improved the image - so I think here backing off a little on the zoom and loosening up the crop/framing would have been a good idea (this assumes the image shown is full frame or close to it).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

I agree with the assessments on showing the horse's tail in the photo, but there was another, much less "photogenic" horse standing directly behind this set that I deliberately cropped out in the viewfinder when I took the shot. I used the extra frame to have room to the left for the horses to look into.
