Dawn at Bear Lake

by Manoj Vallati

Gallery: LandscapePosted June 18, 2011260 views13 comments
Shot this in the early morning last fall when the storm clouds cleared up and the peak was lit.. The light was so warm and saturated that my camera had trouble recording the true colors.. This is blend of two shots...
I had to de-saturate quite a bit but I guess its still not enough..

Not an expert at blending so used the brush tool and opacity control for correctly exposing the lake and the peak

Shot with a 12-24 on 450D
ISO 100 f/22 1 sec and 5 sec
Nikon cpl

Thanks for looking C&C appreciated

I like the comp, the subject and (probably) the lighting. I had to look into your gallery to see if the blurriness is your "style" and saw that you had another image like this one too - so I assume, yes. Regarding that, I'm not a huge fan of this blurry style, at least not in combination with this subject here. I wish the representation were clearer and the yellows were a little less dominant.

Hi Andreas, thanks for the feedback...Here is the posting without the selective clarity applied in PS
I have reduced the yellow but could do only to a certain extent coz the pic started looking un real...
Let me know your views on this
Thanks
Manoj

Without "Selective Clarity"? Isn't clarity supposed to make an image sharper and add contrast. Anyway - I like the second version much better. Still a bit strong in the colors but at least that soft look is gone.

Thanks, In the original picture I reduced the clarity in certain portions of the picture, thereby keeping just the fg and bg sharp..I did not lower the clarity in the second picture...Any tips on how to reduce the color..I did lab processing but even thats not making the pic look less vibrant..

The aura of light here is very nice and lends and artistic take to the image. While the second image looks more "real," the artistic style in the original post is quite appealing.

Without regard to the processing, I think the interaction between the lone rock in the lake and the mountain peak is very nice. I also like the line of shadow across the forest for the interest it adds. There might be room for slight improvement in composition by a small move to the right (more separation between rock and peak) and framing a bit tighter.

I like the repost much better. The first one is too soft. looks as if you used some orton effect. I'm not a big fan of those effects - at least not in landscape photography. Beautiful light, too

I really like the photo and the moment you captured here. :toast:

I am not fond of the heavy blur affect. I think it is was reduced a lot the photo would improve. Oops I just saw #2 photo. That one is the winner IMO.
