Another Inverness Sunset+

Another Inverness sunset, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Something that is very familiar to me and very few others at least here. Four months to go before my return to my favorite place.

All comments and critiques welcome though I know you may have gotten tired of this place. I missed this one with the orange / red sunset embers on the sand and water.

Canon 5DM2
Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L (now my favorite lens)
SR Color Combo + 2-Stop Reverse ND
LR3 and CS5 with some TK luminosity layers and sharpening

Beautiful sky and I really like the specular catchlights condensing and reflecting the sunset hues. Maybe a slight crop on the top omitting some lighter tones for framing.

Eva, I especially enjoy the interplay of the delicate golden reflections with the motion of the water! The uncropped version with the brighter area in the sky offers a kind of weightlessness that I really like.

Nicely done Eva.
The sweep of water about that small rock in the foreground is very cool. I like the small crop revision but I'd suggest a little off the lh side to bring that small rock closer to the third.
Well done

I think I prefer the cropped version but the bit of water movement and reflected light in the foreground is quite nice.

This has almost an optical illusion effect for me. The diagonal wave just below the horizon makes the horizon look rotated slightly, even though it is perfectly level. Interesting. I prefer the crop.

I prefer the original Eva, the motion of the sea and the receeding wave around the rock in the foreground are nice and the hint of light and colour hitting the underneath of the clouds looks great.

Your processing looks pretty darn good Eva. I like the shot and comp. My only suggestion is to maybe reduce the areas of web sharpening in the middle portions of sand and rock near the surf. Excellent work.

I do like the crop for the emphasis it brings to the foreground. Another beauty, Eva! :toast:

This is beautiful, Eva. I really enjoy the glints of color reflected on the wet sand and pebbles and the sky is glorious. It has a peaceful, solitary feel.

Eva, another beauty from NS. Love the colors in the fg water/sand. I agree with Michael's suggestion of toning down the sharpening in the center of the sand and rock by the surf.
I like the original because I think the comp suffers in the cropped version, especially the rock on the right side. When cropped it sort of hangs there in the image, whereas in the original that little swirl of wave and darker area directily below anchors it allowing it to flow into the rest of the frame.
ps, why do you go to NS in Oct, is it for the changing of the leaves or more swell in the ocean?

NICE! One of my favorites of yours from there. Definitely uncropped, and here's why: because this is tailor made for thirds, it has three distinct layers (beach, sea, sky) and the sky is just as strong as the surf here. :wavey:

I was kind of surprised at the number of folks preferring the crop, so out of curiosity i drew a quick diagram. The crop has some merit since it divides 4 sections (quarters) in 2 with the sun line, and three sided triangles in three parts (3/4) as well as 8 total sides in quarters. The uncropped is three parts divided in thirds, and two triangles in two parts (2/3). Both are strong comps, just depends on your emphasis i guess--those who prefer the crop seem to like more on the fg, whereas i prefer more on the bg.

Thanks for the analysis Stan. The un-cropped version is still my preference. It has more symmetry and structure. Your diagram confirms that. Are you a mathematician? I tend toward thirds unless there is a wonderful reflection.

no, not a mathematician, i gave up somehwere between partial differentials and complex analysis--thats when my head started to explode. But i still like exercising those skills--comes in handy when calculating BAC at the pub
