Cloudy Mountainside

by Vance Gese

Made this image from across a valley in Olympic NF last month as clouds moved through. Wish my flatbed scanner could have captured the remarkable detail in the trees, especially the line of alders, the color of which contrasted so nicely against the green of all the conifers.

Your thoughts on this image would be greatly appreciated.
4x5, 600mm, no filters, Provia 100F. TK masks and other techniques.

Large image is much nicer.

Thanks

Well composed. I agree that the larger is much nicer - the detail really makes this.

I especially love the conifers under the clouds, the richness and clarity of the greens under the white.

Vance, this is fantastic! I really like how you brought this together with your composition. Wish I could see this as a large print!

I like this a lot, Vance. Great mood and sense of mystery. I might play with whitening the fog, but looks excellent as presented. Very well done.

Well, now you're working on a Pacific Northwest book, aren't you? Such a pleasing and organized comp, which is just not that easy! Beautifully done, Vance. A great mood inducer. :toast:

Gee, this doesn't scream Pacific Northwest now does it? I love the atmospherics, and the impression of a vast size of this forest. Nice colors too, and the detail must be impressive.

Yep, that captures the essence of the early spring in the Olympics! I love the contrasts between the two trees, and the mist of course.

This has a wonderful diagonal flow to it and I love the contrasts of the alders against the conifers, Vance. The fog completes the image and sets the mood. This is a beautifully conceived image. :toast:

Vance, one of these days I'd love to have a book of your finest intimate work. Like the others, this speaks of sensitivity and reverence for the subject. An image to be savored and appreciated over time.

Hey Vance,

Wonderful! And to get this with the LF is all that more impressive knowing full well how fast the fog changes. You caught this one just perfectly. The patterns of the trees/forest could be an image all by itself, but the fog here provided a wonderful opportunity to create a different and dynamic image. Well done Vance.

I continue to be quite jealous of that focal length on the 4x5... maybe some day. And maybe, just maybe some day you'll put all your work up on the web!

This is simply beautiful Vance. I love the diagonal lines of trees separated by the puffs of clouds but I am really enjoying the ethereal mood. I love the emotion and sense of place you capture in your work.
