Hi Guys,

I am uploading this from outside my tent in the Masai Mara - isn't technology great! This is one from today - first day out with my new 7d!

In the rainy season there are some incredibly dramatic skies and when I came across this big bull elephant I couldn't help but zoom out.

Internet's a bit slow here so I'll start commenting when I get home.

techs: 70mm, f10, 1/500s, iso 320, -1 1/3 from metered exposure.

thanks for looking!

Awesome scene Billy! My kind of image, really dramatic.:toast: In this case though I would have placed the elephant a bit more to the right though (but still on the left half of the frame, at app. 1/3 or 1/4 from the the left).

Enjoy your new toy! In Bots I do not know any places in the NP's yet where there is internet connection/cellular reception, and I sure hope that will never ever change...

The sky is just spectacular, especially when viewed large. Under the circumstances you got a a nice pose from the elephant as well with the trunk raised off the ground. How about a slight crop from the top ?

Great capture of this solitary Elephant in silhouette set against such a dramatic backdrop Billy :^)

While I guess you wanted to include that patch of wonderfully contrasting blue in the upper RH corner of the frame, I agree with Vincent inasmuch as swinging the camera/lens more to the left, bringing the Elephant more into the frame might have created a better effect. That said, this is still a terrific image and I can only hope for similar opportunities in South Africa in a few month's time ;^)

Very much looking forward to seeing more of the wonderful shots you'll be taking with your 7D in days ahead, wishing you all the very best on your Kenyan adventure meantime :^)

A terrific capture, with your new toy!!!
The sky is very dramatic and it is the picture, which justifies spending more time on post processing. I agree about moving the ele slightly to the right and may try to bring out more details in the white cloud.

A dramatic scene! I look forward to seeing it again after you have time to adjust it to your liking.

Pretty cool, Billy! My only nit (small) would be that the horizontal band of dark cloud behind the elephant cuts the bodyline at the mid point, whereas it would have been spectacular to have him fully against a brighter portion of the sky. The choice of a low in the frame horizon emphasizes the drama of the sky nicely. Thanks for sharing.

Must be a real high to be there and get to see scenes like this and then post them to the world in the evening. There is a lot of contrasting light in this, but it comes across well, nothing too dark or blown out. Not sure I agree with a compostion having the elephant more to the right, or at least I wouldn't want it much more to the right. You caught him just right in his walking stance. If I were to ask for anything to be different I would lighten up the clouds near the elephant to make his silhouette stand out more. Good shot!

awesome wide perspective, dramatic sky and distinctive silhouette

I do agree with Vincent, it would have been stronger with the ellie slightly to the right...and I also prefer wilderness areas without the "nuisance" of internet and cellphone reception

I like this and it cerainly is more impressive in the large version, I agree that it may look better with the Elephant further towards the center as it may have allowed a little more of the brighter blue to be included.
The cell phone acess is strange, it comes from the worlds tallest palm tree near the Serena. But it can be useful for guides to keep their sightings secret.

Thanks for the comments guys! I had a look at some other frames for a different composition but unfortunately I don't have any with a striking pose. I kind of like him where he is though! The phone reception can be useful - having gotten lost google maps came in very handy! The Masai Mara hasn't really been a true 'wilderness' for many years now but it is still an extraordinary place - I love it!

Ken - that 'tree' looks utterly ridiculous - not the most effective disguise!!
