While one owl was dozing off, its mate emerged from their burrow. 600mm, f/6.7, 1/1000, from about 18 ft distance.

Welcome, John.

A really fun image. Lots of lovely detail in the sleeping bird. Nice light. The partially hidden yellow eyes really pop-he looks like a sentinel. A larger DOF would have brought both birds into focus and made this one even better.

Be sure to include your shooting data, so that critiques can be of optimum benefit to you.

Hi John: Welcome to NPN and the Avian critique gallery. Your image is really interesting. I like the contrast between the owl with its' eyes closed and the other wide open. I also like the "hidden" look to the lower owl. Adds a lot of interest. Nice work.

This is an interesting behavior shot and I like those peering eyes. Where did you shoot this? I just returned from Malheur WR and spent several attempts near Malheur Lake scouting out owl burrows but never got any action. Glad somebody found some. The color is very good.

Great shot. The second owl peering through the grass makes the shot for me. Welcome to NPN - look forward to seeing more of your work.

Welcome to NPN and a nice owl image to start things off. Good directional lighting to bring out colors and feather detail and the 2nd one popping up with the eye contact is a real bonus, well done.
