Osprey Stretch !!

Took this from my back yard. There is a tree the Ospreys and Eagles like to purch in across the river. I wish the tree was not so far away, it makes it difficult to get great photos with what I have to work with, but it is fun anyway!! And they are not used to people in the area, they keep their distance. I will have to start laying in wait when this constant bad weather clears up!

I used my 40D on this shot with a 100-400L@ 400mm, I/640sec, iso 200, f/5.6, Ap, cropped away about 70% of image.

Sun setting to the left and a windy day also. Some adjustments in CS5.

Any ideas or tricks to bring out more detail in shots like this?

C&C welcome

Dave

Great pose from this guy. You caught him just lifting off. You are fortunate to have such a great vantage point and if that tree were as close as you'd like those birds would be in another one farther away. One of those facts of life I guess.

Lucky you to be able to SEE this from your home. He certainly seems to be looking right at you. Save up for that 600mm, add a 1.4x and viola!!!

Invest in a blind and you will get very close to these birds. It's a lot cheaper than a bigger lens. I use a Kwik Kammo type... :toast:

I will get a blind sometime, but this tree is really tall, If I get much closer it will put me under them, for a decent angle you need to be off to the side aways for a decent shot.....can't aford a 600 0r 800mm lens, I do have a 2x converter, but I have to manual focus which takes pratice, I hardly use it!!

What the subject lacks in sharp detail, the pose and the wonderful direction of those eyes straight at you makes up for by way of a smile-induing image, well done Dave and thanks for sharing :^)

I especially like this terrific pose David, great POV from the front & slightly below.
Looks good even with your rather large crop..
Love those eyes too :wavey:
