Ripples In Time

I headed out to the Eureka Sand dunes on a day that was supposed to be windy in hopes of finding some ripples in the sand. The whole morning was dead calm then around mid day it started to blow. I headed back for the jeep, out of the dunes, to have some lunch and wait for better light. In only a matter of a couple hours the silky dunes from the morning had been transformed, ripples everywhere!

As the wind raged and carried sand off the dunes and in my ears I made a series of images. Then as I sat along this ridge scanning the horizon, this comp just jumped out at me, it was one of those oh, where did that come from and why did it take me so long to "see" it!

If you're familiar with my work at all this image is a bit of a departure from me as I don't do too many dramatic fg type of images. But I felt compelled to this time.

single image, 5d 24mm, 1/8s @f16, polarizer I believe.

Great conversion, neat lines and sinuous swirlies.

Wow, man. Everything from the great texture in the closest dune to the shape of the clouds is fantastic. Definitely one of the best dunes shots I've seen!

Perfect for the B&W. I like the mix of textures in the FG and the more solid tones and shapes in the distance. I can see a little of the tonal shift in the sky due to the polarizer. Not sure if its worth lightening the middle portion or not.

This is terrific Cory. I love the FG in this, and the comp feels very balanced and plenty of places for the eye to travel in this. I really love the light on the distant dunes, reminds me of snow capped peaks. Nice processing on this as well.

I've never done a dune shot before, so you've created an impressive model, Cory. Wonderful foreground textures, and the background shapes fill in the composition beautifully. Outstanding in B&W.

This is really nice; great ripples and a wonderful conversion. I think it'd be equally powerful as a medium pano crop as well.

Good eye to spot this, I like the contrast from dark to light (left to right) along with the composition just showing a small bit of the sky. Well done.
