Another Cardinal

We have had more than our share of these the past couple of years and I've spent a good bit of time photographing them. While I have images I like well enough I have not really been happy until I decided to set up perches in conjunction with a bird feeder and black oil sunflower bait. This guy lit on a small branch pruned from a flowering crab apple. The background is an obnoxious multiflora rose just leafing out.

1/800s, f/5.6, 400mm and iso 400. Canon 40D with 100-400 L IS hand held.

Very nice detail in this cardinal, Larry. I like where you have placed it in the frame. Nice perch and very pleasing background. Great job.

Nice shot!! I think critical focus is on the leaves to left of the bird.
Slow the shutter speed and increase the depth of field, IMO.

Don't let the flora folks here you call a rose obnoxious! Nice job on the reds, Larry-these are tough to expose properly and you did very well. The plumage detail is excellent and I like your choice of perch.

Beautiful image. Love the comp. You have handled the reds very well here. Can be tough. We have lots of cardinals here and it is very easy to blow out the red channel. Nicely done.
