Tiny Trillium

The Snow Trillium, also known as the Dwarf Trillium, is one of the earliest-blooming wildflowers. (I took off for a few days, and when I got back, the snow had melted!) I moved a pair of acorn caps into the scene for a size reference.

ADDENDUM -- forgot to add the name: Trillium nivale

Canon 50D
Sigma 150mm. Macro
1/40 sec. @ f/11; ISO 200
Tripod; Mirror up; Timer
(Backpack used for shade, plus used a reflector)

Excellent shot Wayne. I don't know if we have these in the Pacific NW; I'm going to have to check my guide book. the acorns are a cool element and I like the graphic look to the Trillium's leaves. Perfect dof for this subject IMO.

Bruce, here's the name of the plant, so you can look it up: Trillium nivale

It's native to the East and Midwest, but it has occasionally been transplanted to other locations by Trillium fans. I found this one on a local preserve about 100 miles north of its normal range, probably planted there by the botany buff who owned the property over 50 years ago.

Lovely shot, Wayne - and a great idea to include the acorn caps : they look right as well as giving scale. The flower is beautifully sharp, nicely lit, and set neatly in its habitat.

Tremendous detail in the flower/plant! Striking! Great idea to put the acorns in there; they do make a very nice reference of scale. I might suggest a tiny crop off the top, but that's darn nitty. I really like this a lot, Wayne.

A fine image of the plant in habitat Wayne. Perfect technicals I think and the acorns were inspired.

I really like the addition of the acorn caps...works with the leaves and helps demonstrate the two seasons. I'd be inclined to crop just a bit from the top to remove the white of the BG flower.

The acorn husks add that little something extra that put this over the top. The details in the plant are outstanding

Wayne: What a great find and a superb capture. The acorn caps are the perfect complement. I do like the idea of a small crop from the top. Most excellent. >=))>
