Bond Falls Reflections +

This is a newer (digital) version of the same shot I had made on film many years ago. Many other photographers have shot this too, and probably some of the members here. I have even seen photographers lined up waiting to shoot this view with the fall reflections. Bond Falls is in Upper MI, but only about 20-25 miles or so north of the WI border from Land O Lakes. It is a very popular series of waterfalls and gets lots of visitors. I have been there in the winter when not a sole was around, maybe a few wolf, and a whole different feel.

Nick: I agree with Balan. The diagonal of the fall line through the frame is a very dramatic and effective compositional element. The reflection is wonderful, and the SS is "just right," with enough "slowness" in the main drop area to "silken" the water, but the fall themselves sharp enough to show detail and movement.

Very nice image!

Nice shot with the reflections. You nailed the water on this one. One of my favorite waterfalls because of the large number of shots available.

Glorious comp and color. Love the stripes in the falls. Nice shutter speed for the water action.

Thanks Andy, Phil and Catherine. Nice to hear your thoughts!
Phil, You are right... there are a lot of possibilities there. I was there again this past winter but couldn't get anything I liked. I was looking for ice, water and fog, but it was about 55-60 degrees that day in mid Feb. Nick

Thanks to all of you for your comments.
Matt, This was taken from the south side of the river and is probably about 1/2 way down to the big falls (maybe not quite half) from the road. What was interesting is that I always thought this had to be a late afternoon shot, but I did this in mid morning (I think) that day. There is a pretty flat area right here to shoot from and you will probably be able to spot this shot. Hope to meet up with you one day there. I love some of your work from there. Hope this helps. More than happy to show you the location if you don't find it. Thanks for your comment Matt. Nick

Excellent comp with nice use of the waterfall curves, Nick. You have brought out the color contrast between the two sides very well. I hope to see this falls sometime - perhaps this year.

Thanks -Govind. I hope you make it there too. Think you would enjoy it. You must be about ready to head for Trempealeau, or maybe gone and back by now.
Matt, if you happen to check this out again, here is just a bit wider view that might help find the perch!

Hi Nick: I haven't made to Trempeleau yet. The place was flooded when I checked late last week. The weather is supposed to improve by next week. I'll let you know you once I get some dates set. :wavey:

Nick, as someone living in Michigan for forty years (I am 68), I can now say that I've seen the best of Bond Falls! This is quite a spectacular shot, a combination of awesome reflections, shrewd choice of shutter speed, and fantastic diagonals. I love the way you composed this. Now I don't have to make the long drive, but if I'm ever up in the UP, I'll know exactly where to go. P.S. I think f/16 was the perfect choice here.
