Several Towhees frequent the fir tree just off our back balcony during the summer. Here's a shot from last summer I came across. Canon 5DMk2; 1/80 @ f/8; 400mm; 200 ISO; 70-200 f/2.8L + 2xTC; tripod.

Pretty bird, great pose and comp with the framing greenery. The big nit here is the lack of sharpness and noise in the larger version.

Hi Craig: The pose, perch and BG in this image are fantastic. Something happened in post processing that looks a bit odd. The critical focus appears to be on the green needles below the bird. Considerable noise is evident in the larger version which is very surprising at ISO 200 with a 5DMk2. Was the image underexposed and brought up in post processing?

lovely work Craig, Wonderfully framed by the branches really add to this image. I agree with the comments about the noise.

Noise as noted, but a fine pose and comp. Love the pertness of the bird here, and also the lighter area in the bg is a nice touch for showcasing the subject.

I like the colours, framing by the pines, the pose, and the bright eye.
Pretty major noise and softness in the larger version, though..

The exposure, lighting and comp look fine. The noise and focus issues have been commented on. It looks to be front focused. Do you know which focusing spot you were using? I'm trying to get a feel for whether it was just spot selection as the cause or if it may be worthwhile having the camera checked. With good focus on the eye the DOF should have been fine. I also agree with Keith on the strangeness of this much noise on a 5D MK II at ISO 200. How much of a crop are we loking at?

I agree with the other's comments Craig. Nice bird and comp. Focus and noise an issue in larger version.

Craig,
I like the pose of the Junco, the setting and the comp you used. The background appears to have very little noise but the bird shows a lot and there is also softness.

First, thanks to all for taking the time to comment on one of my infrequent forays into avian photography. My inexperience obviously shows for all the cited reasons. I'll do better next time. I worked on overcoming the softness by trying to paint in some sharpness, which only exacerbated the noise. This has been cropped to about 2/3s the original.
Second, I have to apologize for erroneously posting the info regarding the ISO which is actually 1600, rather than 200. I had this image saved in a work file, but I couldn't find it anywhere in my LR catalog. So I got the metadata from the file info that was in the properties of Windows Explorer, but the ISO info was missing. I did find similar photos of these birds taken from the same location with the same lens and the setting for those was 200 ISO. When I finally located the original on a portable drive I discovered my error. I'm sorry for making the wrong assumption, but I'm feeling very fortunate to have the support of such a community of sharp eyes and minds. I'll respect that good fortune by trying harder to more accurate with both information and focus.in the future.
