Olive Tree Strascape
by Helio Cristovao
Hi everybody, been away for a while, but back posting some of the last months work.
I´m presenting a recent image, from a nocturnal field session near Montejunto mountain Range - protected landscape area in Portugal - shot one week ago.
This is a 20 photos rendition manually stacked, each exposed for 5 minutes long at f/4 100ISO - Plus 1 photo manually blended in exposed at f/4 500ISO for 60 seconds, this one painted with headlamp light, to achieve the detail/overall light in the olive tree and FG grass. Working at 4550K color temperature, this is the color obtained under a nearby village lights and some moonlight.
Method: Composition worked at the end of the day, Autofocused during the twilight, and then about an hour waiting for the night to fall. Started timer programed exposures totalizing 2 hours. I went away, and 3 hours later, returning to the spot made the last 60sec. exposures light painted. Used Nikon digital, wide-angle lens, and the usual equipment.
As allways, Your opinion is very welcome. Thanks.

Two things: are you glad that when you came back your set up was still there. If I saw a camera set up way out in the field, all by its self, where I was shooting I may very well interpret it as a gift from God and take it and thank Him!
Next, I think the trunk of the tree is a little bright and would consider toning down the highlights there. Also, can you mellow the haloing out on the grass edge a little more? I think it would be perfect then!

I'm with comments made about the sky. Though I think the colours here work very well, darkening the sky a bit would increse interest, attention to the trails. I would also burn bit the lower part of the tree as it has enough details. This however might not be what you wanted to show so don't treat it as a critique :)
Nevertheless, it is an excellent work :)
I do agree with the suggestion to tone down the trunk brightness some, and even the green at the bottom a bit...this would make the aforementioned highlights even more dramatic.
I also wondered about the sky colour, but you are the artist and created your vision wonderfully and in the end, this picture demanded my attention and made me click through to comment, so it's a little hard to get picky here! :)
Nicely seen, created and presented.
Of course that the orange/red sky being the result of the village illumination, it´s hard to be avoided in this composition, though, that is really the primary motif that draw me shooting the scene. The exquisite color result was intentional, a matter of personal taste. Sure I understand, as a matter of tastes, it´s not the kind of composition for all the audience... :) Regarding the selective light adjustments mentioned, about trunk and grass, I guess essentially the trunk can accept some rework.
Many thanks,
