Icicles at sunrise

by Carolyn Derstine

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted April 12, 2011500 views10 comments
This was taken on a recent trip to the mountains of northern PA where we had 8 inches of snow. The snow/ice would melt some during the day and refreeze at night so it made for lots of icicles. This was taken right outide our bedroom window at sunrise.

Canon Rebel T1i. 65mm at F/22 for 1/20 sec. ISO 100.

Very intriguing image Carolyn. I like the way you've composed it a little off center.

Terrific colors and textures in the icicles. The light in the sky also works very well. In fulfilling my wife's contention that I am "Mr. Symmetry", I'd like to see this more balanced in the frame (but don't tell her I said that ).

I think I can get you on Mark's "page". I see the gorgeous icicles...but also see what you probably like...the horiz. "w" on the left, fanning out to the right.

Maybe, if you cropped out the top bit of blue, your eye would rest on both the icicles and their Unique BG. In fact, I would DEFINITELY crop the top quarter of the scene.....cropping just to the top of the dark sky on the right...this would draw your eye right to the "w and the darkness in the Right hand blue streak...balancing out the darks. Plus it would really make the icicles shine. At least it does, when I "scroll" crop off the top.

It also squares it up, which IMO balances the whole scene........ emphasizing both the subjects and the BG.

Beautiful subject and so original :toast:

I would really like to see this re-posted with the crop!

This beautiful sunrise makes a wonderful BG Carolyn.
The icicles have picked up those colors nicely, and I like their unique & interesting shapes too.
Simple effective comp, it works for me..I'd call it Fire & Ice though

This is beautiful the way the sky and ice echo each other. Being able to include the sunrise is a big plus.

Its the details that really grab me here. The tiny little bubbles in the icicles. The frozen droplet at the end of the second one. The ripples of light and shadow in the ice. Chilly and beautiful. Nice job!

A stunning juxtaposition between the warm background and impression of icy cold in the foreground. Superb execution of a wonderful opportunity, well spotted Carolyn and well deserved recognition, congratulations :^)
