The Search For Lunch

The day was cloudy which made the water a bit dull, but the clouds acted as a diffuser too. This adult breeding Reddish Egret was photographed on Frenchman's road just after crossing on the Boliver ferry between Galveston and the Boliver Peninsula. I slipped out of the car, sat on the ground, and photographed this image with my 500 mm resting on my knees. I was a little concerned as to weather I should post this because of the heavy cloud cover and rather drab colors. Options please.

7D, 500mm, F/5.6, 1/1600, +0.67, ISO 400
Hand held propped on knees
Evaluative, 20.7 m from subject
Small crop for composition

Detail looks good in the larger view, but I'm seeing a halo that probably indicates a bit too much sharpening. Its hard to be certain since the contrast is up too and you can get halos just from too much contrast. Most likely a combination of the two. I like the upraised foot and the mud or other material dropping off. Let me know if you have Photomatix 4 and I'll give you my settings for a "nature" HDR on a single image that can open up the shadows and drop contrast back to where you have other options for processing (like Lab) that tend to build contrast.

I like the diffused light, and the natural colors. Nice pose with the raised foot. I wish for a slight head turn. :toast:

The Egret really pops from the bg in the larger image, Dottie. I like the pose and the textures in the plumage. A very nice image.
