Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Superior, AZ
March 26, 2011
Nikon D70, 70-300 VR @ 110mm
Aperture preferred Matrix meter, ISO 400, 1/500th @ f/10, -2/3rds ev
Raw, PS CS3, full frame

I rarely get out of Avian, and seldom have anything suitable for this Gallery. But since I had my lightweight gear along with my bird lens and D200 on a tripod while hiking the arboretum I was able to get this shot of my favorite tree there.

The large version looks very nice and one gets a feeling being in there. I'd say that this one really shines in a big print on the wall. The small version here feels a little busy cramped - some shots just aren't meant to be for the web.

So good to see some green again. We're still getting some snow in UT but hopefully spring is not far behind.

Richard,

I like this one. The tree looks quite nice, and I love the foreground. I am wondering if you could burn down the sunlit areas on the right just a bit in order to bring more attention to the tree. There is lots of nice detail throughout.

I really like the subject, the colors and the contrast. If it were mine I think I might try cropping from the left, maybe as fare as the little thin shrub up on the rock. To me it would take the tree more out of the center and bring the focus more on the tree.

Richard,

I like it. You have some very nice light here, at least it's complimenting all the elements here including the tree, the grasses and the rocky background. Although the tree is centered, I think it is framed very nicely with the grasses and background rocks. All the technical aspects here are excellent.

If I had to make a suggestion, it's one of those, "I know I wasn't there" type moments. But I'm wishing a little that you had moved a little to the left to help separate your favorite tree with the smaller tree in the background. Perhaps "fitting" the tree a little better in to the bg, if that makes sense. So the suggestion really is to take notice of the background, even though your favorite part or your main subject is not the background. Just something to toss around next time you're out.
