Birch Leaves and Frost

by Vance Gese

Gallery: LandscapePosted March 6, 2011308 views27 comments
These birch leaves were found out on a frozen lake one very cold morning in south-central Alaska several years ago. The ice was very dark and these leaves and frost seemed suspended in space. Would appreciate your opinions, comments, suggestions, on this image.
4x5, 210mm, Velvia.

Large image provided.

Thanks.

This is an amazing image Vance! The light on the leaves is fantastic as is the black background and ice crystal growing from the edge of the leaves. I really like the comp you have chosen as well. Magnificent work!

Oh, I like this a lot! The color, detail, and the composition is wonderful. The exposure is perfect

The only suggestion I have, Vance, is that you send me a print!

Well done!

The detail of the frost and the comp are excellent. I would be tempted to clone out the smaller spots in the background ice that have no detail, but that is a personal choice. :wavey:

Wow! I love the frost patterns around the leaves, and the light is pitch perfect. No suggestions at all from me.

A real beaut, Vance!!!! I would agree with Patricia about the smaller specks, but it is an excellent image any way you look at it. Wonderful colors, comp and subject.

Wow, Vance, what a great eye to see this. Absolutely love the look of this and the sense of outer space behind the leaves. This really is something we've not seen the likes of here before.

This is a terrific image. The light on the leaves and the frost growing from them are spectacular. I agree with Floris about the appearance of floating in space. I can't imaging the detail that you must have in the original.

Vance, this is a very beautiful and interesting image. "the frost seemed suspended in space" is very apt description for this image, beacause the background looks like a galaxy of stars. This image works quite well. You might have tried to isolate each leaf individually. The lower leaf by itself is quite stunning. Very cool shot!

Thanks everyone for the great comments. Very much appreciate your kind words. I had gone to this lake hoping to find some neat ice patterns but instead found this dark, almost featureless ice. But when I came upon these leaves against that ice, I couldn't believe it. Wish I had made a few other images.
I'll clone out a few of the specks in the ice as several folks suggested, perhaps those that don't add to the deep space look. This is full-frame 4x5 so you can imagine the detail on the transparency. I think the contrast of the Velvia added to the dark values of the ice.
Thanks again.

Vance,

This is just incredible. What a fantastic combination of autumn leaves, black ice and frost. What a great find! This certainly does have an outer-space look to this, as if the leaves are literally floating out in space. The light catching the leaves is amazing as well. Wow, this is awesome.
