Island

I am wondering if this works for anyone or is to minimalistic. I know it may not be everyone's cup of tea but I am interested to hear your thoughts.

This image was taken facing east on St. Ann's Bay on a misty evening after the sun set. The atmosphere had an eerie glow as the last bit of light played with the mist.

Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, October 2010.

Canon 5DM2
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS at 70mm
ISO100 1/8sec f/11

Thanks for looking and for your comments and critiques.

We all know these precious moments when we are left alone with our thoughts - I think this is one of them. The sea and the island give us a basis, now it is up to us to fill in the space. I just let the countless shades flow over me. Thanks for sharing this intimate picture.

Beautiful shot Eva. I like how the color gradient turns to blue in the upper sky. Very nice example of minimalism.

The colors are so beautiful and soothing. I like your emphasis on the sky with just a bit of water included. I'm less sure about the position of the island. I could see this either without the island or with the island closer to the center. In spite of that nit, this pictures makes me want to sit and listen to the waves and let the colors soak into my psyche.

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful comments that speak of the emotional impact of this scene..... It was a very emotional experience for me just being absorbed in the mist and the light.

Mark - I did post an image last year without the island if interested.

Evening Mist

Thanks again folks.

This definitely works for me, Eva. I like how the water is almost identical to the sky.

I think it would work better if the land mass was in the center (don't know if you shot it that way too?).

The next thought would be to maybe allot 1/3 for the water, cutting into the sky into 2/3. My first suggesting I feel stronger about.

Cool shot. :toast:

I commented on your previous version, which i slightly prefer to this one. I think id like a vertical of the left half here better than both--now that would be minimal! Like Mark, i think the island needs to be closer to center here, as is it skews the balance for me. Very pretty, just not optimal IMO. :wavey:

I think it works too. If I were to nit, I wouldn't mind seeing a touch more definition in the sky.

Eva,

Sorry I'm so late on this, but the image has stuck in my mind and I had to come back and comment. I don't think you can be too simplistic (unless someone puts up blank image file!) But really this fits the definition wonderfully. To me, the island is what holds this all together. The placement near the edge is dynamic - although it could have been dead center and I think that would work too. Colors are gorgeous. I love it.
