I was really hoping to have some luck with red foxes during my two recent trips to Yellowstone. I've been longing for some winter fox encounters, since thus far I've only photographed them in the spring (when they're a bit scragglier).
Some luck is better than no luck, I guess. I had a couple of brief encounters at closer range, but this wasn't one of those times. I actually snowshoed out into the Lamar Valley in hopes of getting closer to this individual, which was mousing way out beyond the road. But by the time I tromped out there, it had crossed the river and there was barely time to snap a few photos as it scampered up the far hillside.
Still, I like the blob of orange contrasted against a clean field of snow like this. It's certainly different than anything I'd photographed before. The fox did pause at the top and look back at me teasingly before disappearing over the hill.

6 commentsthe orange against white is really striking. It's a pity the fox isn't looking slightly to its right, but as you say luck wasn't with you on the day. I think you've got a lovely shot regardless though. Very graphic almost.
Nice one

I'm in full agreement with everyone here - I like the strong contrast of the orange fox against the vast white background but am left wishing for even a slightly different pose (even that slight head turn). But even without that, this image does draw one's eye (or at least mine!).
Cheers...thanks for sharing this...
