Tamanawas Winter

Winter at Tamanawas Falls, Oregon, February 2011.

This is one of my favorite snowshoe trips in the Mt Hood area. Every time I go to Tamanawas Falls in the winter the ice and snow are different. One thing I found interesting on this trip was that some of the icicles on the left don't point straight down. Does anyone know what causes this? I'm guessing it may have to do with the airflow near the falls.

Scott, I have never visited this place in the winter...but it looks great! The angled icicles are a result of the updraft cause by the turbulent air that shoots up from the base of the falls.

Scott, this is breathtaking, I just can feel the cold breeze. I could imagine a bit more space at the bottom, this might offer a still better sense for scale. Incredible dimensions!

Very cool - I like how the water flow-in places mimics the waterfall. I see what you mean about the angled icicles. While on a glacier in Peru, saw icicles that were angled and i thought I was going crazy- I figured they should be hanging straight down.

Pretty shot Scott. I like how cold it looks. Looks like a place I'd love to visit some day. I think I would have preferred just a touch slower shutter speed to smooth out the water flow a bit.

Scott,

Excellent! The falls are great, but I also like the inclusion of the two snow covered trees as well. In fact I may be inclined to crop in some from the left just to emphasize their relationship with the scene even more.

The icicles are fascinating too. I like this very much.

I really like this image, but I think it needs cropping. I used the monitor to crop off the left side and made a square composition and it improved greatly. Put the falls just slightly left of center, and then those nice trees in the right foreground really anchor the image. Nice job.
