Short-eared Owl

We have them on fence-posts over here, too! This one seemed to be less shy than many that I have encountered, and is a rather nice individual. I stood on a very public dyke, so there was no need for any hide or camo; these birds are quite used to walkers and joggers.

1D MkIV, 700mm, 1/1250 @ f8, ISO800, mid-day slightly overcast.

Thanks for looking; do comment please.

Very nice shot KC. Love the BG and the bird. DOF looks good, but would love to see a larger version to see all the great detail in this shot. I like the "ears" too.

Superb photo KC. The intensity of the eyes is really wonderful. Some day I am going to have to make a trip to Van. to check out some of your west coast birding, especially if these guys are accessible!

Wonderful yellow eyes and I do like the composition and natural setting, especially the branches at right.

That's ridiculous KC. Australians owls hide away in dense foliage and never come out during the day. Love the rich browns.

cheers

I like the look and the way the feather circle going around the head to draw you into those eyes, well done.

Outstanding work from you KC ..the detail is fantastic and the monochromatic feel is great. Couple of small things which are not nits really ..but that twig which goes into the wing...and could the bird have been a little to the left of the frame ..Anyways a Great image ..well done

Good one, KC. Looks like SEO's are pretty popular these days. This guy is fluffed out a little differently and I like the whites in the face.

Great picture! I really like how he is staring right at you! Looks very sharp, and I really like the colours. Also this Short-Eared Owls colours look a little different to me, they almost look darker compared to other pictures of them that I have seen!
