Recently, we went to Pedernales Falls State Park,TX
I made a study of all the shapes carved by water. There were so many..some smooth, some jagged, light, dark, pockmarked by dissolving the limestone with rain, some with sole marks...... I also photographed the actual waterfall, which was interesting. But, not nearly as interesting as the erosional features sculpted by rain and flash floods!
It was midday (horrors, not the golden hour!). The shadows played tricks with your eyes depending on where you stood. If you look closely at the feature, that I mirror imaged...you can see that it seems to be a stone on top of the gray limestone. But, it is actually a depression in the limestone!
To see the depression best...start with your eye at the top left of the left photo. Run your eye along the outside edge and you'll see the depression. Now, look at the right photo...run your eye from top to bottom on the outside edge, and you will swear that this is a flagstone!
Pretty cool!!!
I posted a triptych of the same rocks rotated 90 degrees in photo Art. Compare the two and tell me what you think! I'll post some more from the trip soon.

8 commentsThe illusion is that the left side looks to be a depression, while the same image, when seen on the right (backwards... viewed from the other side) appears to be a positive feature..a piece of flagstone. The play of light makes it look concave or convex depending on your view.
The correct answer is that this is a depression in the limestone. I thought this was a cool optical illusion. The light was just perfect. But, it's not cool if no one sees it!
Very well spotted a unique record.
