Bald Eagle
Photo of the Month - March '11
Refuge personnel have used rotenone to kill some of the damaging and invasive carp. These fish float down the stream channels and provide a feast for the gulls and eagles but there aren't many fish to go around at this point and the competition for them can be fierce. This eagle was actually eating the fish in flight, apparently to avoid competition from other eagles and gulls on the ice. This bird had a gull harrassing it just to the left of the frame and we saw gulls actually snapping at eagle tail feathers in flight. Below the eagle, scales and debris are coming off the carp. What may appear to some as a narrow halo along parts of the right wing is simply backlighting of the feather edges.

Quite simply out standing what else can you say.
Detail & colour is spot on.
Might see a few on route pass Breckendale BC next week, but think it's too early

One quick question....was part of this crop decision in part to make this fit nicely into a magazine cover?

Congratulations on winning Avian photo of the year. I think it could probably win the decade.

Truly exceptional work all year long, and then topped by this incredible shot.
Way to go!

I'm concerned what happens to these birds that eat fish that were killed with chemicals. I'm surprised no one mentioned that.

As per usual, Mia and I were shooting together from my pickup on this day - her from the back seat. I was concentrating on other eagles and hadn't even seen this one coming in when I heard Mia's familiar "bird!, bird!" heads up and then heard her camera bursts. By the time I was able to focus on this eagle it was closer, it had started to eat the fish and unfortunately Mia's buffer had filled and she missed much of what I was able to get.
In short, Mia deserves some of the credit for this image. I'd have never seen the bird till it was long gone and the eating action over if it hadn't been for her. Thanks once again Mia, big time!
