Red Tail w/Prey

Another squirrel bit the dust. The redtail was in a neighbor's yard after one of our almost daily snow or ice storms. Used Canon 20D with 100-400 IS lens since both my 7D and 40D died and are on their way to the repair shop.

Comments always welcomed.

Nice capture with excellent detail on the hawk. Love those big, strong legs and the prey is a bonus! I am seeing a halo on this, even with the light bg. Hope you get your equipment back soon. Sharon

I like the feel of this image Patricia. Exposure looks good. I would add a bit more room on the right given the bird is looking that direction. I too see the halo and would work on removing that. Would help to see a larger version to assess detail and sharpness.

Great capture, Patricia. I like the pose of the bird, the puzzled expression and the detail of the feathers.

I'd move the bird left of the frame, too. Nice grab of a very light phase one.

Good moment captured here.

What happened to the two cameras?

Thanks for the helpful critiques. The halo isn't there on the tiff version. So I assume I caused it when being downsized to a JPEG and sharpened for posting.... the original was a horizontal cropped to vertical so there is plenty of room to reposition the bird.

Richard: The 7D is less than a year old and for some reason the battery is not making a connection so at least this one is under warranty. Was out shooting and thought the battery wasn't charged... put in another and it worked to about 30 shots and also showed no charge. Came home and found that both batteries were charged. The same day the 40D started firing off like a machine gun even when shut off. Turned off, reinserted batteries, tried other batteries and it still had the same problem. Only will stop firing off shots if the battery is pulled. NOT A GOOD DAY!

Patricia,

I like the pose, the prey and the setting. Would give some more room on the right side of the frame since you have it and work out the halo. Looks like you have some nice details in the plumage.

I hope they don't long to repair your cameras. Crazy that they both went out on the same day!

Boy, sorry to hear about your camera body woes. But getting something like this in the bag would certainly cheer me up.

Nice catch! So sorry about your cameras - but you did fine with the old one.
Really good pose and detail. I agree with a bit more room in front.
