Red-bellied Woodpecker

One of my favorite species. Used to not have many photos of them, but I've gotten quite a few over the last couple years.

All it takes is a bit of suet in the crook of a tree (just out of the frame on the top), and some patience!!

Canon 50D, 400 5.6L, 1/200, f7.1, ISO 100, no flash.

Great light, pose and eye contact Terry. Love the view of those big feet gripping the tree bark. I may have increased the ISO to a minimum of 200 to get more shutter speed. The background color is very appealing to me.

I like it a lot, Terry. great light, sweet pose. not quite as much detail in the head as I'd expect, not sure why.

Great shot. Don't shoot until you see the red of their eyes. I have one of these coming into the suet feeder, but I stupidly have a suet feeder that looks like a feeder. I also stupidly shoot through the windows, but that is a different problem.

This is very nice Terry. I like the lighting and the bird looking toward something in the distance. I have tried to image these and they are much more difficult than they appear. Trouble getting that eye to appear like this one. Nice job.

I see these guys when I visit my sister in Ohio. I think they are quite striking. Lovely pose, colors, and details. Wish I could get one like this.

I agree a beautiful bird. The composition, pose and detail is superb but doesn't the light just make that bit of difference. One of my favourite woody images. Graham
