" Ice Eagle "
by Jeff Wiles
Our national bird was photographed on Lake Pepin,Minnesota in the month of January. Equipment used was was a Celestron 1000mm Lens mounted on a Canon FTB 35mm Camera. My objective was simply put to portray the eagle in the context of its' aquatic winter habitation.

Now, I'm trying to figure out your gear, this was taken on a film camera, correct? And the lens, if I am not mistaken, is a mirror reflex or telescopic lens?
I do like the setting but the bird feels centered top to bottom and side to side in addition the bird is very small in the frame. While I do enjoy & appreciate images where the bird is small in the frame, in this case I think the bird is too small. You could crop some from the bottom and some from the right side to decenter the eagle, that would also make the eagle bigger in the frame. It would also remove the odd black streak coming from the bottom of the frame about 2/3rds of the way to the right.
You'll learn a lot from the bird photographers here on NPN.
I like the sunlight effect in this shot. It appears the sun was shining only on a small area which includes the eagle. Thanks for posting and take advantage of all the great resources. This site is the sole reason I have improved my skills and fallen in love with avian photography.
