La Jolla, California

We have some really nice sunsets recently here in So Cal the past week or so. It's also been unseasonably warm... I am in flip flops, shorts and a tee shirt. I think there is a slight off shore flow that brings some of the dry, hot and slightly dirty air out to the ocean and this intensifies the oranges and reds in the sunsets. Luckily, I was able to catch this one sunset after coaching a volleyball tournament all day.

Yes, this is the same area I shoot the Pothole shots at, but I tried to find other cool spots nearby that had some interesting, yet different foregrounds. Hope this doesn't bore you all.

Canon 5Dmk2, Nikon 14-24. 3 exposure blend to control highlights, as I can't really use gnd filters with this lens.

That's gorgeous! Doesn't matter if it's a different spot to me, this is fresh. You usually post vertical and tighter horizontals. This wide"grand" view is beautiful. The color and richness of the scene is great as well. Probably my favorite from you with the new lens!

Looks good Jimmy. The high light control is superb. Love those pothole they make a great foreground anchor and the green just glows in that one pothole. Cheers

Real Pretty, Jimmy! I especially like how that one green spot stands out from the rest of the scene. Real minor nit: the lens distortion causing the far rhs ocean horizon to drop off a bit. Also, you want to tone down the reds just in the far left cloud, where they are starting to get clipped--the typical 5D probem... :wavey:

That great sunset makes this one very special. The unusual shapes in the foreground have a nice sweep from left to right and on to the horizon. Excellent work!

Love the way the warm sunset light catches the pothole pattern. I'd love to try that 14-24 lens sometime, looks like you can get some pretty extreme perspectives.

Beautiful ocean scene, the FG is great! The dipping horizon on the right is a little distracting, but that's being picky :toast:

Jimmy,

Have they designated these little potholes as the Jimmy Gekas Regional Preserve yet? They should if they haven't yet!

Beautiful seascape. I like your chose proportions which tells me you're really focused in on the patterns and reflections of the shore. The gorgeous sky is simply a gorgeous accent to the scene. Well done!

I like pictures from this area a lot, Jimmy, and your light here is very well controlled. Compositionally, this feels less coherent than some of your pictures. It's sort of like a snap-shot of the potholes and not a composition of them. Don't want to come off sounding harsh. It just seems maybe there is a bit too much here.

You kept me waiting a little while.Up the coast a little in Long Beach I have been seeing some fantastic colors in the morning and evening, it's just amazing how good the winter sunrises and sunsets in So Cal are. Especially with offshore flow and high clouds to pick up the color it seems like forever. The higher the clouds the more color changes and time it takes for the show to be over. The potholes make a great foreground Jimmy. The other thing I wait impatiently for is that NW swell to sweep in with the 10 foot plus breakers here. Then the sunsets get really interesting with the backlit towers of spray flying into the air.

I wish there was a way for there to be even more reflection in the foreground pools, but that is just naturally not the case with this sort of perspective, and I think the perspective is right for this spot.
