moody winter

I spent some time in the Canadian Rocks a few years ago, hiking and snow shoeing. It was overcast and snowing on this particular morning. I really did not think the sun would come out, well I was wrong. C&C welcome. Please see larger version.

A plain and in this way impressive composition leading to the sunlight! Naturally captured, I like it.

Very nicely composed!

I wish the highlights in the sky wasnt blown though...but still a very nice shot.

That's a winter beauty Kyle, my only nit would be suggesting cropping off the top 3/4 inch or so of the sky. Real nice clarity throughout.

Wow, that feels cold  I love how pristine and tactile the snow is. I would suggest some selective dodging of the foreground and burning in the sky a bit.

I love the texture of the snow and ice, and the overall mood. Before cropping any the sky, I would suggest some additional post processing there to see if you can bring the blown areas under control - I would think you could fairly easily.

Kyle, I like this quite a bit. It has a very nice mood to me. Really some great texture in that frozen snow. The pines are so nice and crisp, and that looks great against the sky. I too wish the sky wasn't quite as bright from the sun.

Wonderful line and beautiful scene. I too would crop a touch off the top. :toast:

Nice shot dude! Really incredible texture detail in the snow and frozen stream. I think the big hot spot in the sky needs to be dealt with somehow. maybe Harley's 15% clone technique?

I like the more intimate elements here. A scroll crop of the sky to just above the tallest tree works quite well too.

Beautiful light. I really like this snowy scene. I'd like to see a bit more detail in the sunlight.
One trick I've used for that is reprocess the raw file with a false WB that gives you more highlight details. Sometimes an extreme move. Put that reprocessed file on a layer above. Switch the blend mode to Lumi. Mask to taste. If the color cast is anemic, put a curve layer above that and group with layer below, and add a bit of natural color cast back in....

Kyle,

You know I really like this one. I like that you've kept some cool blue tones in the lower part and I really like how the stream and bank lead the viewer in to the scene. The line of trees is great defining the separation between the sky/clouds and the landscape.

The sky/sun is bright (it is the sun after all) and isn't all that problematic for me considering the scene and conditions.

Really nice comp and I agree that just a touch more work on the highlights and it's a hanger!
