Sleigh Dust
by Jared Atencio
I was awaken early on Christmas morning to a hungry dog and a slight headache from a wee too much eggnog the night before. After feeding the dog, I peaked out the window and was surprised to see that the previous nights rainstorms had parted just enough to allow the first rays of Christmas sunlight to begin illuminating the undersides of these layered clouds. The Mrs. was still sleeping, so I decided to make a run for it to try and catch at least a portion of this sunrise. I arrived at my go-to spot with just enough time to get off about 6 shots before the color quickly fizzled out.
This was shot in Pacific Grove, CA, from the tip of the peninsula looking back across the Monterey Bay toward Castroville and Marina. As always, I appreciate any honest feedback or critique on how to improve this image or technique in the field. Thanks in Advance!
Tech Notes:
Canon 5dmkii
Canon 17-40mm f/4 L
2 shots @ f/8 blended by hand for focus
ISO 250 (to maintain proper exposure for wave motion and reduce cloud movement)
Curves adjustments in PS to balance exposure using TK's Lum. Masks
Slight color adjustments in PS
TK's Vib and Sat Masks

Michael, when viewing a small thumbnail of the image on my iphone, I could clearly see the unbalanced light. The scene was naturally unbalanced, but I will try to balance the LHS a bit and to see if it gives the image more impact. Thanks for the suggestion and happy holidays to you as well
