Electric Chocolate (plus B+W)

This is from a very special evening at Grand Falls back in August. The monsoons were raging here in Arizona, and the Little Colorado had such a heavy discharge that the entire width of the falls was engulfed by a single channel. I talked to some USGS personnel on-site, and they were estimating 5000-6000 cfs of water flowing at the falls. A got a few good shots on this evening, but this one was the most special.

After taking the more "typical" Grand Falls compositions for the sunset, I noticed this storm cell dropping some nice bolts in the distance. This composition was very much influenced by the location of the lightning in relation to the falls. I realize it may not be the strongest comp, but I feel like the magic of the moment makes up for what the composition is lacking. I consider this one of my strongest works up to this point, but would love to hear what the great minds here have to say!

I have this cropped to a 5x7 ratio, which I think looks best, but will likely use a 4x5 ratio for larger printing.

Raw conversion in Lightroom, dodging and burning using TK's luminosity masks.

This is a totally amazing combination of powerful elements here. I think it would be an even stronger Black and White image with dodging of the water and burning of the sky. Very impressive though. A very rare capture! I love it.

Marc, I never even considered that, but it is a great idea! Here's a real quick run-through Silver Efex Pro, and can probably use some tweaking, but you're right, it is incredibly powerful in black and white. Guess I can't use the "Electric Chocolate" moniker in monochrome, but I'll probably use both.

"...it may not be the strongest comp, but I feel like the magic of the moment makes up for what the composition is lacking..."

Agree with this Jake. It's not ideal, but you should be proud of what you captured. I don't know how much a tighter crop would help this, though I'm sure you've played around with that already.

I think the colors and environment are pretty unique. Granted, I'd be happy with any lightning shot. Looks like the runoff from Willy Wonka's factory.

Really phenomenal natural elements transposed with each other. I take it this was an evening or night exposure?

Lots of powerful elements at work here, very well done Jake. Both versions are nice but I think I prefer the color version for the rich colors of the water, and also the contrast between warm and cool tones.

Really impressive capture and certainly a keeper, though I agree with you that the comp is not overly compelling, I think mostly because of too many strong horizontal lines in the falls. I like the color and bW both

Wohoo! Looks great, but I think a little more tweaking would help. You could bring down the brightness on the left down and increase contrast a bit to make that lightning more visible. Also the sky seems a bit too dark, loosing some texture. But still, the b&w conversion has brought a whole to feel to this image!

Very strong composition I agree with Marc this can be really dramatic and impressive in B&W. You have incredible elements in your shot.

Very nice image. I agree totally about catching the storm and the flood. The scene and setting are great even if its not the perfect comp.

Great story shot. I agree with you about sacrificing composition to include the lightning. I've always wanted to see this.

Very neat one with combination of slow movement of water and instant capture of lighting bolt. The color contrast enhance the composition.

What an outstanding image! You should be very proud of this one. There's a lot of different elements going into this one that make it a totally unique shot. I might prefer the bw version over the color - very dramatic.

Def. a great scene captured here Jake! The water in the immediate FG is a little too bright for me, and the overall exposure makes this seem a little "flat." If you could do some selective dodging and burning as Marc suggested, I think this would really pop. I tend to like the color version and the chocolate Willy Wonka water.

I think the 4x5 crop is the way to go. I know you'd lost some nice clouds but I'd crop the sky down to just above the lightening bolt. The combination of blue clouds and chocolate water is very interesting but I'm a big B&W guy and if were my image I probably go BW on this.

Jake,

Already mentioned, but what a fantastic combination of such powerful natural events. The b&w is very dramatic and easily wins my vote. Although I do think it could use some additional minor work like burning down the bright cloud area on the left And if I were to crop anything, I would actually start at the bottom and crop out about 1/2 of the water below. Not so much that you cramp up the bottom of the falls, but there is enough at the bottom that I think it takes a little away from the action above.

In the color version, the color seems a little off to me. Of course I wasn't there, but the the water and landscape has a little salmon color to it and for me the sky is to purple. at least for my taste anyway.

Awesome scene and capture of nature's fury - just needs a little bit of tweaking. And I would agree with you that a 4x5 crop would be strong and of course work well for printing ratios.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging comments and suggestions. I haven't had time to really perfect the black and white or dodge/burn the color, but here's the color version with an edited color balance according to Lon's suggestion, and a 4x5 crop according to his suggestion as well.

Here's a hopefully better version of the black and white, with the raw run through Silver Efex Pro and then luminosity mask dodging and burning in CS5. Additional suggestions welcome!
