Distorted Hallway

Another one from my recent trip to Utah/Arizona. Again, this is from that little known slot canyon. I would've liked a bit more dynamic light, but the mud ripples on the floor, the converging diagonal lines, and the mind-bending, surreal shape of this hallway made it irresistible.

Fun Fact: Somehow, Marc traversed this hallway WITHOUT TOUCHING THE FLOOR so that he wouldn't ruin the mud rolls in my composition. I didn't see him do it, so don't ask me how he did. Perhaps he moonlights as Spiderman?

5DM2, 24mm, f/16, 1.6 seconds, ISO 100, single exposure, dodging and burning to add depth and interest

Pretty unique comp with the downwards persepective. Would it be possible to pull down the brightest highlight just a hair, it seems to be pulling my attention just a hair to much.
Great work :toast:

The perspective here is fantastic. I love the composition, and the depth in the shot. The exposure seems just right - except for those blown highlights at the end of the "hallway" - though they don't bother me too much. My eye wants to follow the path to that spot, so it works out.

The colors seem dull and take my attention away from the beauty of the image. I'd love to see this image in black and white.

Really nice work, Kory!

Wow, the texture in the floor more than compensates for the lack of dramatic light. The sharp edges of the mud ripples contrast nicely with the smooth contours of the canyon walls. That alone sets this apart from many other slot canyon photos I have seen.

Jeremy, yeah you may be right. I'm outta town right now so I'll repost a toned down version if time allows.

Varina, yeah, for some reason EVERY time I post to this forum, the colors get muted. I can't figure it out, and I've given up trying. Try this link, it's how I intended the image to look.

Thanks for your comments, though.

Cool shot Cory. :toast:

I would be seriously tempted to crop a little off the top, like maybe 3:4 to get the somewhat more distracting far background upper light out of the scene.

Mud curls sure are special. I agree that cropping a bit from the top makes for a bit more homogeneous comp.

The contrasting textures are very effective kory, I especially like the curly mud that has formed somewhat of a half circle in the lower right corner. I would prefer to see the top bright part cropped out.

I really like the perspective, Kory. The mud patterns really make this one for me.

I am viewing this on a color managed system with a wide gamut monitor. I see a very slight difference between the image posted here and the one on your site. The one on your site does appear to have bit more punch. I am using IE8.

There is a topic posted by Harley in General Discussion about imbedded profiles and how different browsers affect how we see images that are posted.

I do agree about the high values at the top, bit I'm not sure a crop is the way to mitigate it; a slight burn, perhaps? I don't know.

This a fine shot! Good work!

Fantastic textures in the mud and great leading lines. Love how the sandstone layers and pattern contrast with the mud floor texture. Might try and reduce the brightness of that light at the far end of the canyon but even that is a minor suggestion. Outstanding image.

Excellent mud patterns. I would concur with the crop suggestions. Taking some off the top really pops the excellent floor graphics.

A unique perspective and composition, well seen, I would agree about taking some off the top but a fine image all the way around, way to go.

Sweeeeet! Those patterns in the mud are amazing and work well with the stripes on the wall. I even see an abstract of just the bottom mud and wall as a great image. :toast:
