Point Lobos

I took this photo at Point Lobos. The water that flows between the rocks is part of the Pacific Ocean. I don't know why I made this photo but I like it because I think the shades in the photo work well. I would like to know if the composition is good and if the title Point Lobos is good for it or how would you name it?

Thank you.

The scene doesn't necessarily "wow" me, but the comp and light do hold my interest. This is a scene that I would've walked by and not considered photo potential. It's neat you were able to see a pretty decent comp here.

The name is fine. I like the soft, peaceful light and the rising mist. I would prefer less of the dominating bulk in the foreground, as it tends to keep the eye away from the best part (to me) of the image (from the water back). Too much of an anchor.

Overall, I like the composition, but I would crop about 10% off the bottom - the various small rocks, different colors, and clumps of grass distract IMO. The main focus (for me) is the beautiful foggy area of the image. Title is fine.

I agree with the other comments, too much in the foreground - maybe a crop above the grass? - from the water back is better, and I'd like to see more sky I think.

Zaynab,

Thanks for posting. As far as what in a name, I think it's pretty unimportant. Sure, names can provide descriptive terms to help or guide the viewer in to a certain conclusion about the image, but in the end it is the image itself that should speak to the viewer and not the title.

Technically this is captured and presented very nicely. Perfect exposure in the foggy atmosphere and it looks sharp enough at this web size.

Compositionally I see a couple of things. First, as others mentioned there is a lot of foreground rock. In addition to that, IMHO, the rocky foreground is somewhat "blocking" the water to where the foreground rock is slightly merging with the far shore. I would agree with others that a small crop from both bottom and top would strengthen the composition.

The other thing is a bit more subtle. I'm sure you took many more images than this one and I'm guessing you also have some horizontals? For me, this scene is more "pastoral" meaning a calm view that might be better presented horizontally. Vertical captures often times work in presenting power, tall and dynamic near/far compositions. Of course both formats can work in any situation, so I guess I'm just saying that I think a horizontal composition from this area would work too.
