This young Great Spotted Woodpecker was holding on to part of my feeding station just outside my living room window so I took a few shots through the double glazing.

Sony A350
Sigma 50-500 EX
1/200th second
f8
ISO 400
-0.3 stop exposure compensation
Centre-weighted metering

I zoomed out to 120mm to capture the whole picture.
The adult male (in the middle) was watching over his offspring while they explored my feeding station.

Geoffrey,

I like the pose, the view of the eye and how nicely the red on the top of the head shows. You don't mention if this was cropped but if it was and you have a little more room on the bottom of the frame I think I would add some back there, it just feels a smidge tight on the tail.

Interesting to get all three birds on the feeding station. Nice catch

What an opportunity Geoff! I like the shot a lot. My gut instinct would be to lighten the image ever so slightly but it's a call I'm not absolutely confident of and it's certainly not a nit. Well done.

Great detail Geoff. That's a pretty spectacular view from your living room window. I see where you get your great backgrounds from.

cheers

Great capture Geoffrey. Thanks for proving the image of the feeding station. Very interesting to be able to show all three birds.

Really interesting post, Geoffrey. It's fun to compare this image to the one of a Hairy Woodpecker that I just posted. There are so many similarities. I've seen two in one tree (but could not include them in an image). Having an image showing three is really quite special! Nice work. :toast: :toast:
