On my way home after a wonderful day of hiking in the Shawnee National Forest and slammed on the brakes when I saw this as the sun was setting. Grabbed the tripod and got a few shots before the sun was gone.

The larger version may show a tad oversharpening but I wanted that on purpose to show off the needles when printed large....if that makes any sense.

Really crisp and detailed especially on the larger version. A terrific reflection you've caught too. Looks a little warm but I guess that's just effect of the last light on the oranges. Nice one.

A lovely autumn scene, Beth. I think the sharpening in the larger version looks pretty good, there is definitely a lot of detail there!

Nice comp! I like the light play in this. I do kind of wish for a little more tonal separation. Might not be possible naturally.

Talk about a reflection full of details - this is just lovely Beth. The large version is the only way to view this - what a great reflection!

Nicely abstract and real. Good eye for an image that didn't last long.

Beth,

I can certainly see why you would slam on your brakes for this! A terrific reflectionscape. And even though you describe this as very late light, for me this seems a little brighter and "hot" than I would expect a few moments before the sun going down. I think you have room to slightly darken as well as boost the contrast and saturation a tad. By a tad, I mean it wouldn't take much to really make this capture stand out.

On a side note:
I wanted that on purpose to show off the needles when printed large

I'm curious about this. I don't know about everyone else, but I sharpen only for the output stage and I sharpen differently for print than I do for web presentation. IMHO, over-sharpening this for the web should really have nothing to do with your larger print version. I would say sharpen/USM or whatever technique you use... to make your jpg look good on the web. Your print file should be completely separate and unique. Hope I didn't misunderstand and hope this makes sense.

A simply beautiful scene, Beth. The mix of a few evergreens adds to all the muted reds.

Nice late day scene, well worth stopping for. I like the mix of evergreens in with the autumn colors. I would clone out that water dimple at the bottom of the scene. nice capture.

Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. It was pretty "hot" on the trees when the sun hit it but perhaps in post processing, I added a bit of warmth but this looks pretty true to what I shot. Lon, I was in error when I posted my statement. I meant to say that I wanted it a bit oversharpened on the web image for the effect of sharp needles. When I was shooting this, it was very aparent to me the "dead" needles were oversharp in the scenery. The way the sun was hitting it, it looked more "graphic" and I was attempting to recreate that in the web image. Well....I probabaly don't make any sense now  but yes, I do sharpen differently when web vs print. Thanks for your observations. It is very much appreciated.

Oh that is funny! I think we can all relate to slamming the brakes. All justified as we can see here. This is a glorious scene. I really feel I am there.

I think this might have worked better for me with a 'perfect' reflection (undisturbed) but its still real nice, some great detail!
