I don't really know, but an educated guess would be that this was not a "typical" visit to the Subway these days, especially at this time of year. It was just about perfect. I had hiked to the Subway last Friday (see my
previous post), and it probably was closer to a "typical" visit, except for a chance encounter with Guy Tal. So I decided to try it again on Wednesday. This time the weather was perfect; sunny, warm, little or no wind. There were less people on the trail, and at the Subway, than there were on my earlier hike last Friday. I, and two other hikers/photographers who just happened to be heading out at the same time, were the first people on the trail. It was their first attempt to hike the Left Fork. We hiked up together. They stopped to photograph a couple of locations along the trail before the Subway. I was the only person at Arch Angel Falls for about fifteen minutes until they arrived. Then I was the only person in the Subway for about fifteen minutes again until they arrived. We were the only people in the Subway for well over an hour until a few other people arrived.
The autumn colors in Zion seem to be arriving quite late this year compared to the past several years. However, the colors also seem quite vibrant this year. I'd say that the colors were just about peaking on Wednesday (11/3/10) along the Left Fork. In Zion Canyon, the colors don't seem to have peaked yet.

23 commentsI am glad you faired better this trip to the Subway. Looks like conditions were awesome. Your processing looks awesome too, except for that bit of clipping in the water, which isn't too noticeable by the way. Honestly, I am not crazy about the composition here. It seems like there is particular interest in the foliage above the cliffs resulting in the tunnel placement at approximatley 60% up the frame. It also allows the cliff on the right hand side to play a prominent role in the image, which I don't find to be too interesting. While I applaud your originality and processing, I find this composition takes some of the mystery out of the location and I would prefer a tighter, more traditional, crop down on the glow tunnel.

Mitch, thanks for your comment. Those are fallen leaves in the foreground, not lichen.
