Missouri River, Eastern Montana. Although, more than anything, I'm drawn to mountains, given where I live, I've made it somewhat of a project of mine to photograph eastern Montana. It's not nearly as sexy as Glacier Park, but it hasn't been photographed to death, either. Needless to say, it's a challenge to come up with intriguing compositions. The skies were not cooperating well, so I had to work extra hard on processing. I'd like to know what you think.

This was taken the weekend before last. While my friends were out shooting elk, I was shooting photos!

Canon 5D2. 24-105/4. ISO 100. f/19. 3 exposure blend.

The golds and the rusts are well complimented by the orange sky. Well done.

Good for you. I'm a true believer in not ignoring what's out the back door, and you did a great job here. Vegetation in the lrc would maybe add a tad, but I love the rest of the foreground. It works well with the golden tones here.

The blend looks great, with my only comment being a tad of haloing on my monitor, away from the center of the horizon. I have photos where the originals have haloing, it's just the way nature was at the time, so ignore the comment if it's not a result of the blend.

Beautiful, peaceful moment, Doug! The processing looks very good, except maybe for the sky, which on the sides is a bit too bright.

Thanks folks. John - I think some of the haloing is web sharpening that I didn't mask well enough, but I'll look at the high res when I get home this evening. In this repost, I've added just a bit of vignette to darken the sides of the sky and deemphasize the dirt on the rlc - I did this at work from a SCREEN SHOT, so it's not as sharp, but I think you get the idea.

Sharpening-wise the original is way better - especially in the foliage.

Sometimes the less photographed areas hold some of the best photographic treasures Doug. This is definitely a unique view of Montana and I salute you for going there to take this. The comp is pretty decent, but I'm wondering what more of the river in the shot would do for something like this. Very nice regardless.

Great shot Doug, I've driven through eastern Montana and I know what you mean about finding interesting compositions. I like your original post better, the mountains seemed to get really dark on your repost and the vegetation didn't "pop" as much. I do think that you should burn the top corners just a touch though. :toast:

Love the use of monochromatic color, Doug! This is just warm and fuzzy. Well, it's really not fuzzy, but sharp actually.

Doug,
I guess I've spent some time looking at your photos but I recognized this as yours before looking to make sure. Beautiful photo and you have caught the mood and spirit of the landscape perfectly. Though I love the mountains there is a bit of my heart that relates to this kind of country-expecially this time of year when it takes on an even more lonely and isolated feeling. The northern Montana plains have their own feeling and the expanses can just draw you in as in this photo. You have some beautiful images of Alaska but I think that your feeling for the country comes out stronger in your close to home images which I feel are your strongest. I guess being close to home and having more opportunities to shoot them doesn't hurt either.

Hey Doug

It's nice .. but not my favorite. I prefer a composition cropped about halfway .. non lake or sky at all. IMO, the sky doesn't do justice to the f/g. Even a similar shot without the lake, showing some b/g but not the lake or sky, would be nice.

Cheers

Hopefully you're wearing orange while you are out there. So far you've been finding some real gems Doug. The warm light and the monotone color is just great. Real nice processing makes this one fly. This must be around Fort Peck reservoir maybe? Thank you for the comment on the cover image. Much appreciated.

Love this image, Doug. The wonderful details of the foreground work very well to anchor the feeling of a vast expanse. Being able to place the rising sun and water with the light reflecting on the water in the upper right is spot on. Beautiful 'Big Sky' image.

Th repost pretty much addresses any issues I may have had. There's a nice diagonal tension captured here between the fg brush and the rising sun. Nice work!
