Living on the edge...

... of Sea and Light. While visiting Point Lobos State Reserve in California this month my attention was caught by the play of light and water on the Sea Lion Rocks near sunset. It is a good distance from the Sea Lion Point trail across the gap known as the Devil's Cauldron so I used a 400/5.6L lens on my 7D to make this image.

Talk about drama. It's quite a scene, even without the sea lions. It's a pity they chose not to feature themselves a bit more prominently for you.

Hi Paul,

Wow...I really like this one! The light and wave action have combined to give you a fantastic setting in which to capture these sea lions/seals. My eyes instantly went to the subjects, so for me they're definitely prominent enough in this image!

Very well done - pleasure to look at!

 Paul, this is an incredible image! The light, the crashing waves, the splashes and strong silhouettes make this a very powerful image. What I like most however is the perspective you took; including those BG waves gives this a sort of surreal 3D (or should I call it 4D) look to it. Excellent work! :toast:

Wow, what a scene, very dramatic, great job in framing this, the angle of light shows up on the seals backs and the background waves really add the final touch, well seen and well done.

Thank you all for your comments. I had spent the day in Point Lobos preparing for some upcoming workshops and really had been on the lookout for more iconic landscape images but the lure of the light was too much to ignore.

Marvelous image. Wonder how the seals can stay on those slippery rocks with those waves crashing?
The inclusion of the water in the top half of the frame really hits home as to the power of the sea.

Wonderful back light photo. The light accentuated fury of the sea. Seals make this photo extra special.
