Mark III 1D, 600mm w/1.4 ext, ISO 640, f/6.3, 1/640th, natural light

This is an older image that I reworked. One of the things I did in processing was to darken the outer edges to create this vignette effect and I wonder how others react to it?

Comments greatly appreciated.

Peter

IMO the bird is simply spectacular Peter. Sharp, great gorget, even light - all the good stuff. I think the vignette is effective but I instinctively have some hesitation about doing it. Possibly my own shortcoming...

I'll echo what Ron said, excellent colors and details. The vignette is done well IMHO, very subtle yet does what it's supposed to do, keep the eye in the frame. Well done. :toast:

This is lovely and I would like to have it in my portfolio. Good job on the BG and vignetting. I would not of thought of doing that but I think it really helps.

I don't mind the vignetting, and the detail and colors are spectacular, especially given the focal length. The BG doesn't do much for me... as it looks "fake" (obviously not much you can do about that!) I prefer the more varied BG in some of your kingfisher photos.

Honestly, I thought the vignette looked too strong in the thumbnail (more like a large halo), but once I opened it that was not the case at all. I think it is very well done and color and detail of the hummer is mind blowing. Awesome image! :toast:

Pretty nice image. I think the vignette looks good. Subtle and not too obvious.

I remember this beauty Peter, I think the vignette is subtle enough to work well here. :toast:

I like it! Good color on the head of the hummer, good detail in the head and body, and the blur of the wings works well. as for the vignette, looks fine to me, just about right. Thanks for sharing.

Cracking detailed shot

Regards the vignette.I've seen this done really heavely on images in the past(on flora images), which has had high praise. This is nothing, and the "bit" i do see suites the image.

Gorgeous shot of the hummingbird, Peter. I don't mind a bit of vignette with an even bg like this-it adds a touch of interest. :toast:

A stunning photo with or without vignette. Esthetically I think that the effect helps, but I'm always reluctant to apply it myself as I wonder if others might perceive it as the mark of an inferior lens with light fall off - after all isn't that part of the reason we spend the big bucks for good gear?

Peter

I love the great look at the hummingbird's face, bill and eye. Love the motion blur of the wings and the view of the tiny feet too. I'm not sure about the vignette, I think this would be lovely without it too.
