Geese & More Geese

Taken this afternoon on the Salmon River near the village of Malone in northern New York. The Canada geese and snow geese stop off here on their migratory path south…and I captured a few of them in this frame. Slight cropping due to a little rotation…my first posting to this gallery. Waves of them were landing and taking off…anyone have a spare 800mm lens? It was very windy so there was probably some camera shake on this.

Canon T1i, 70-200mm/1.4x@98mm, f20, 1/40s, ISO-200, tripod

C&C welcome and thanks for looking.

I think this would have made a nice pano shot, with a slightly lower angle and maybe a closer shooting distance, if that was possible.
Was this north or south of Malone? We're about 10 mi. southeast of Malone and the Rotary Pond has frequently been covered with an assortment of geese when I pass it on the way into town.

Welcome to the Avian Gallery, Ron. Very interesting first post. The snow geese look almost like Canada geese cut-outs in this image! Another option would be to take several images and stitch them together to obtain a panorama. I saw many Canada geese flocks around here. I think we are managing to export most of them! :toast:

Welcome to avian Ron. This is a really nice first post and something we don't see that often the use of a smaller focal length. This works well for me because of the nice fall colors and the contrast of the dark Canadas and light Snows in the bg. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. :toast:

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. I agree with the comments about a pano, but yesterday just wasn't the day for that - it was cold in the wind and the gusts were rocking my camera/tripod rig at times. I'll be returning on a calmer day.

Rita - yes, south of Malone, it was at Rotary. I couldn't really get closer (except through the lens), but in this instance I wanted to include the fall colors and give a sense of numbers.

I like this shot quite alot. I does seem it would lend itself better to a horizontal but this vertical is very nice too. It appears this shot is somewhat backlit and it looks good but I might try shooting it with low light to your back also just to see how it looks.

A beautiful scene and birdscape Ron, I especially love the fall colors of the trees in the background.

I like this shot. Atypical of the usual avian image with numerous birds in the FG, and the fall color in the BG. Nice DOF too. I would have cropped a little closer on the top removing the green trees. This would have brought your horizon line closer to the top third of the image. Nice first post. Dottie
