Rainy Slag [+edit]
by John Williams
Vine Maple in Oregon's Mt. Hood Wilderness.
It's been warm here in the Pacific Northwest, and fall color seems to be running well behind. Here and there though, there are small patches doing well. I spent Saturday afternoon hiking around in the rain, struggling to find a composition that caught a bit of fall. (This ended up being a silly thing to do, because clambering around on the moss-covered rocky slopes with my backpack on used my legs a lot more than I expected. My wife and I walked the Portland Marathon the next day and I paid for my foolishness.)
For those not familiar with the term slag, it is the molten waste produced when smelting metallic ore. When I was a child in Arizona, I was always fascinated when they would dump the slag at night. It would form a ribbon of glowing golden-red that gave me visions of volcanoes.

Despite wiping my lens frequently, I've had to clone out several water spots from the tall tree.

27 commentsThe colors and details are really wonderful, the blending is perfect. I really enjoy how your composition captures different layers of colors and textures.
Strong diagonal lines and colors and I like the dark grey in the sky - it adds quite a bit of moodiness to the scene. I like the shot and think it is a keeper, but falls short of your best work primarily because of the subject matter. I could also see a slight crop down off the top to eliminate the overlapping branches in the ULC. Out of curiousity - the image taken at f/4 - what part of the scene was that used for and why?
Thanks,
Michael
Michael, it was all shot at f/16 (f/4.0 is the speed of the lens).
The orange foliage is over saturated on my monitor.

A very lovely PNW autumn kind of image - damp and saturated with color!

I agree with the comments. The color was sparse enough that comps were limited. I would have loved to have shot in the opposite direction (to the south), it had a lot more depth to it and I think I could have had a solid cliff background without the distracting ulc. But the leaves were very dull when viewed form the north, so I went with the better color. A return trip will be in order.
I think you found a really nice comp as well. Curious how you made the colors pop so much?
Great job all around
