Bald Eagles

Here's another shot from the eagle location at Hood Canal, WA. The adult on the right is trying to steal a sculpin from the immature. The fish is in the immature's left talon and unfortunately it doesn't show up that well. This is cropped to about 55% of FF. I cloned out a few dark spots in the water.

A shot like this couldn't be dreamed of in my parts were BE's are infrequent visitors and adults are almost never seen. I like the dynamics of the shot but it's a shame the fish is near impossible to see. Ironically it would have shown up well against the white tail of the adult.

Getting two eagles in great poses and both in focus is quite an achievement, way to go Nate! Adults with their white heads are nightmarish to expose for, especially against a bright sky, again nicely done here.

Nate: Of course I'm not a bird guy but this looks fabulous to me. Spectacular poses on both birds. Just terrific. >=))>

Neat action Nate, the wing spread of both birds is great. I like the details you were able to expose in the dark feathers and the head angle of the adult. I do wish the immature eagle's head didn't blend in with the body and wings but you did get eye contact with it and that is a bonus.

This is also seen up here from time to time, but never close enough to photograph. Well done getting this, Nate!

Nate,
The action is right place right time. With a soft background I would like to see stronger contrast in the birds. I did copyright some of my earlier images and found it very distracting.
Geroge Lepp addresses this in an article in OP . Good composition.

Wonderful action shoot Nate, especially with the two in one opportunity!! Maybe a bit more contrast could be tried as suggestion, but really well caught!! :toast:

Wow. What an amazing interaction to capture!! I do wish the head of the immature stood out better. I feel bad for him having to fight to keep his meal. Did he?

Thanks for your comments everyone!

Sally, in this case the adult did end up stealing the fish from the immature. I've also seen young birds take fish from adults so it goes both ways. This is pretty common behavior, the eagles will also try to steal fish from Great Blue Herons. There are a lot of eagles at this spot at low tides in the spring and summer so if you are there at the right time of day you will usually get a few chances for this type of interaction shot.

Nice capture of interesting behavior Nate. Good separation of the eagles and even though the behavior is the focus here I like the wispy background clouds too.

This is a great shot Nate. I love the tatered look of the IM's tail. I do wish that the IM's head was turned away from the adult bird so it could be seen better against the BG.

Awesome photo. It actually looks like the adult is giving instructions to the immature. Truly a nice catch.

Another vote for more contrast, especially in the darks. But what a great shot this is. The head is unfortunate, but you can't have it all...
