White Rose
by Richard Sogn
I'm hoping for feedback from the flora forum, as I have little experience in shooting or evaluating abstract photographs of flowers. I was trying to push myself into doing something a little different while at the Portland Rose Garden. This is of a pure white rose taken with a 180mm macro lens at f/4 so that only the edges of the petals are in focus. The yellow is from backlighting through the petals. I can't tell if it's junk, or an interesting abstract.

18 commentsIn my limited experience I have found long focal lengths nearly useless for intimate abstracts. Shorter focal lengths like 50 to 100mm provide better perspectives as one can really go close and explore a lot more. It also provides the flexibility of hand holding.

Were you handholding the camera. Your plane of focus could have been a little sharper with a tripod and no winds.
And I like the image as is ...

presented. I like your depth of field choice.

Sure works and worth keeping. Nice repeating line patterns arising from the yellow mist.
