Rose Lake Sunset

From a recent trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This is Rose lake, on the US-Canadian border. The land in the horizon is Canada; the foreground is Minnesota.

In spite of the great beauty of the place, the Boundary waters is a very difficult place to find good compositions. It's nothing but uber-thick, tangled forests and water.

Most sunsets and sunrises were cloudless and therefore uninteresting. This was the best light of the trip. I wish I could've found a more compelling focal point, but that's nature for you.

5DMarkII, 16mm, f/16, ISO 100, two exposures blended for dynamic range, one at .3 seconds, one at 1.3 seconds.

Hmm, that's strange. For some reason, the colors got washed out when I posted this image. They definitely pop more than what's shown here. Oh well. Just use your imagination.

Very nice and natural processing for this one. I feel as though I am standing there and viewing it in person. The reflected clouds in the foreground are really nice. Also, the sweeping action of the clouds makes for a very dynamic sky.

Some pretty cool textures both in the sky and the foreground. Nicely done.

Oh this is very nice. Boundary Waters is one of my very favorite places but I haven't been there in many years. I understand what you're saying about the difficulty of finding good comps as it's mainly placid lakes and heavy forest - gorgeous but tough to transfer onto a photograph. I think I got my best Boundary Water images in winter but man it was cold!

Love the symmetry only broken by the foreground rock. Processing is very natrual and attractive.

This look very good, Kory. The blend looks totally natural. One of the best I've seen. I like how the clouds sort of mimic the rocks.

Beautiful photo Kory. The clouds and the reflection look awesome. I think you found a really nice comp here. I've spent a lot of time in Quebec and understand what you mean about the difficulties of finding a good comp around the lakes.

Nice image Kory. I have had similar issues after posting, but when it happens it's usually a difference in sharpness. Rocks, reflections and sky, who doesn't like that? :toast:

Really sucks you right in, excellent. Even with the muted colors it is very nice.

Very nice Kory. Looks natural to me and well done. I really like the clouds and the reflection with the rocks in the foreground looks great. I think you did very well with the comp too.
Heading to the North Shore next week, but won't make the Boundary Waters. Nice work!
