I am a new member and this is my first post. The shot was taken in Homer, AK. I am recently retired and want to become more serous about my photography. That is why I joined NPN. For the last 6 months my wife and I have been traveling and have gone from Key West, FL to Fairbanks, AK. I will be posting many of the images from our travels and look forward to any comments that will help me grow in my work.

Nice shot with the log but the water in the background is kinda distracting me a bit. I would love to get a shot of a Bald Eagle.

Welcome to NPN Richard! Nice first post....I have never been there, but immeditaely knew this was Homer since I have seen many images from there. I agree about the log can be a tiny bit distracting, but it is a minor nit and personally doesn't bother me. If you are bothered by it, I think cloning it out though might improve the impact of this shot (if you are okay with cloning), or possibly applying mor lens blur to the entire BG. I look forward to seeing many more images form you. I think you will enjoy this forum.

Welcome Richard. Very nice shot of this Baldie, great wing position letting us see the feathers and tail spread a bit. The water and the log in the bg is a bit distracting -the water because the foam is so white it detracts from the head of the Baldie and the log because of how it sticks up into the white water and interrupts the line but it's not that distracting, it just pulls the eye away from the bird a bit. Some day I'd love to get to Homer!

Welcome to NPN Richard. You will learn a lot here. Some really good photographers and people on this site. This is a really nice shot to start with. I like the pose and the nice head turn and eye contact from the bird. A 1200px version, which you are allowed to post, would help me judge critical sharpness better, from this 720px image it look really good. If this were my image I might be tempted to crop in on the bird more, as the FG and BG elements in this image really do not add, and to some might even distract a bit from the nice eagle. Again, welcome and keep posting and most of all commenting on others work. Critically viewing and commenting on others work is the best way to improve your own photography skills.

Welcome Richard, a fine first post, I like the pose of the bird and your exposure looks good. If you had been able to get a lower angle that may have made for a more pleasing bg but this is very nice as is. :toast:

Hi Richard. Welcome to the site. Nice view of the back and a great head turn. Good detail in the white areas too. I like the composition as is, although some other opportunities might occur with a lower angle as Nate suggests.

Welcome Richard. I think you've done well with this eagle. I like the wing position and tail spread combined with the head turn. Exposure looks good as does sharpness at this size.
